What works? Cash, credit cards, travel checks. That might depend what country you are in. Personal Checks will not be accepted. Check with your bank on Debit Cards. What is the limit if it lost or stolen?
Exchange your money the legal way. Keep small amounts of cash in an easy to reach pocket to access for stores and street purchases and the majority of your money separate.
Try to use one credit card for international transactions. Find a card with low foreign transaction fees. Set up card alerts and complete purchases in local currency.
Consider using a neck / shoulder security pouch, money belt or a hidden wallet types.

Your Domestic Automobile Insurance is not primary. Local law will require you to get legal coverage. This will be sold by the car rental agency.
Who can drive the rental car? If the person is not listed on the car rental contract then they cannot drive.
Local laws - DUI, Alcohol and Drugs laws may be significantly more severe than your home country.
Try to familiarize yourself with the formal and informal rules of the road. Do you know what the road signs say? Driving on the opposite side of the road can be very challenging and intimidating.
